OS X and keyboard use

One of the few complaints I have with OS X is that it seems to deliberately thwart the use of the keyboard for anything other than text entry. What I didn’t know was that there’s a little checkbox in System Preferences → Keyboard and Mouse → Keyboard Shortcuts that says “Turn on full keyboard access”… This, although still not quite there, is a huge improvement.

ICE, ICE, Baby!

After becoming completely disgruntled with the process of scanning my film negatives, I decided to do something about it before I went and did something crazy like sell my Leica and stick completely to digital capture. Many hours of research later, I picked up a new Nikon Coolscan V. Oh man, what an improvement from my Minolta Scan Duel III! Here’s why… 4000dpi very clean and sharp scans in about one third the time of my old 2400dpi scanner

Radioactive Leica Glass

The Leica forum on Photo.net is a hoot. Although there are a number of retired dentist equipment fondlers who bore me to tears, there are also quite a few fun, smart and generally helpful people. Today there was a discussion about why the glass used to make Leica lenses is (it is said) superior to most others. One response stated, in all seriousness, that it was “Special glass made with rare earths from the Carpathian Mountains.

Trackback Spam

It had to happen sooner or later – trackback spam. I’ve had to disable trackbacks since there’s no good defense that I’m aware of for this nonsense.

Family Guy UNCancelled

Someone could’ve told me. A new season of The Family Guy is in production and is likely to air this year. Freakin' Sweet!

iWork?

With the rumors circulating about Apple introducing an updated AppleWorks app suite and naming it iWork, I wondered what would happen to the little outfit that currently makes my favorite (thanks to Ryan) time tracking app. Looks like the rumors are true. iWork is now, suddenly, iBiz

G

Long, but fascinating piece describing the relatively (no pun) unknown relationship between Einstein and Gödel. “Gödel: the union of Einstein and Kafka, had for the first time in human history proved, from the equations of relativity, that time travel was not a philosopher’s fantasy but a scientific possibility. Yet again he had somehow contrived, from within the very heart of mathematics, to drop a bomb into the laps of the philosophers.

A Dozen Books (or so)

My resolutions for 2005 are not yet formalized, which is something I plan to do sometime this year. I do, however, have a few things that I’d like to accomplish. In the interest of making myself accountable for those things I thought I’d jot them down here. The fear of public ridicule if I fail is a pretty good motivator. The first is to read at least 12 books this year.

Eyes Without a Face

I try to see every film that gets a Tomatometer reading of 90% and above at Rotten Tomatoes. Eyes Without a Face, a French horror film from 1960 received a 100% rating. Nah. A few clever and interesting visuals couldn’t mask (ha!) the fact that it was mostly boring and silly. Skip this one.

The arsonist has oddly-shaped feet

I’d like to apologize to everyone who has ever harbored even the slightest amount of respect for me. I just laughed my ass off at Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. It just doesn’t make any sense. Now I’m going to be humming Afternoon Delight for frickin' days.
