A Microsoft Excel Artist – swissmiss

swissmiss: For over 15 years, Japanese artist Tatsuo Horiuchi has rendered the subtle details of mountains, cherry blossoms, and dense forests with the most unlikely tool: Microsoft Excel. I’ve always thought that people use Microsoft Excel for more things than necessary and they should maybe use something else, but Tatsuo Horiuchi should keep doing exactly what he’s doing.

MarsEdit 4.0

![][1] I don’t even remember when I first started using MarsEdit, but it was a long time ago. It’s been a reliable, easy, smart, useful way to post to blogs. Version 4.0 has been released and it’s even better. Using MarsEdit is reason enough to stick with WordPress for my blogs (although it works great with Micro.blog too).

Miniflux

Eli Mellen mentioned Miniflux one too many times so I had to give it a go. Miniflux is a bare-bones RSS reader that you host yourself. It uses SQLite for storage so it’s super simple to install and run. I’ve imported many of my feeds into it and so far it’s working great. It has very good keyboard support, which is important to me. It’s fast, simple, and efficient.

Anatomy of a Polaroid Picture

Polaroid Originals Magazine: Creating a photograph with instant film is part imagination, part science, a dash of luck and a lot of chemistry. Make that a whole heck of a lot of chemistry. But what happens, exactly, after you press the shutter button on your Polaroid camera? What’s going on under the surface in the seconds before your image is revealed?

I’ve activated the Gutenberg WordPress plugin here. I like trying new things.

Braintoss

I’ve been using Braintoss for only a couple of days and it has already found a place on my iPhone’s dock. Braintoss lets me quickly write a note, capture a photo, or record a voice message and have it immediately processed and sent to my email inbox. It’s simple and effective. It’s unlikely to replace my paper pocket notebook but it’s a handy alternative.

I nearly forgot about this blog. I’d say that means I have too many of them.

Ron (2017)

Ron (2017). Leica M6. 50mm Summicron. Tri-X @1250 in Diafine From a recent roll, here’s my dad sitting in a chair listening to my mom and sister talking. Developing with Diafine is so easy and being able to shoot at 1200+ ISO indoors is so handy that I’ve convinced myself that the contrasty, grainy look is what I was going for in the first place.

Digital Black and White

I have always disliked the idea of converting digital photos from color to black and white. As with film, I feel that one should decide if a photo is to be color or black and white before pressing the shutter. It’s tempting to always shoot as Raw files and convert to black and white later if desired. That’s the best answer for most people, but not for me. As convenient and flexible as the color-to-black-and-white process can be, it feels wrong.
