Auto Import From iPhone

I don’t use Photos app and still don’t trust iCloud, so I manually import photos from my iPhone to my Mac.

I’ve been using Image Capture for this, but today I read This Engadget post and learned about using AutoImporter.app instead. I didn’t know that was an option.

Now, when I plug in my iPhone, AutoImporter opens and automatically copies all the photos to ~/Photos/AutoImport and closes. The only issue was that the photos were not automatically deleted after import, even though I had the “Delete after import” option checked in Image Capture.

I had to set a preference in the AutoImporter app itself. The app doesn’t live in an obvious location, so this will open it.

open "/System/Library/Image Capture/Support/Application/AutoImporter.app"

Then, in AutoImporter’s preferences, check the “Delete items from camera after successful import” option.

Marco On The Apple TV Remote

Marco Arment:

Picking up the remote in any orientation and brushing against any part of it during handling, without physically pushing a button, should never result in accidental input. Picking it up should feel safe.

I hate the new Apple TV remote even more than I hated the old one. I’m the sort of person who likes to hold the remote while watching shows. Not possible with Apple’s too-thin, too-sensitive remote. Marco’s right, it should feel safe. It doesn’t.

The Resolution Of The Bitcoin Experiment

Mike Hearn:

But despite knowing that Bitcoin could fail all along, the now inescapable conclusion that it has failed still saddens me greatly. The fundamentals are broken and whatever happens to the price in the short term, the long term trend should probably be downwards. I will no longer be taking part in Bitcoin development and have sold all my coins.

I’ve never trusted Bitcoin and sold all of mine a while ago. I didn’t understand it, if we’re being honest, but I never planned on using Bitcoin in “real life” and brushed it off as a nerdy experiment that would eventually go away.

Alan Rickman

Alan Rickman was terrific. Memorable roles in Die Hard and the Harry Potter films cemented him as a favorite.

However, my favorite Alan Rickman role was that of Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest. It should have been a terrible movie but it’s a terrific movie, largely due to Mr. Rickman.

The Reductive Seduction of Other People's Problems

Courtney Martin on Medium:

Resist the reductive seduction of other people’s problems and, instead, fall in love with the longer-term prospect of staying home and facing systemic complexity head on. Or go if you must, but stay long enough, listen hard enough so that “other people” become real people. But, be warned, they may not seem so easy to “save.”

I usually react badly to those who say things like “Why worry about them, we’ve got enough problems right here!” but this piece made me reconsider that attitude.

Hosting My Blog Using Github Pages

Baty.net is now using Github Pages for hosting. This might be the only hosting option I haven’t tried.

I usually host the site on my VPS at Linode. I can handle most sysadmin-type tasks so this works fine. After last week’s DDoS attacks at Linode I started considering other options again.

New55 1Shot

Jess and Katie. Crown Graphic. New55 1Shot. This is my first exposure using New55’s 1Shot 4x5 Negative film. 1Shot comes packaged as individual negatives in “Readyload” type sheets. They’re meant to be used with the Polaroid 545 film backs. The film is New55’s “Atomic-X” which they describe as: This 100-speed panchromatic black and white 4x5 sheet film offers a classic tonal range from deep blacks through sublime mid-grays to soft and striking highlights.

Lunchboxes

When I was a kid lunch boxes were important. Even so, I can’t remember exactly which ones I’ve had. I found these at a local sale so bought them all. The only one I’m certain I didn’t have is Rambo, since I’d graduated from High School by the time First Blood was released. I’m pretty sure I’d stopped carrying a lunch box by then.

I fully intend to clean these up and use them to bring my lunch to work.

Dead Fish

Dead Goldfish in Snow (2015). Digital. Fuji X-100

I discovered one of my dad’s goldfish had died. I fished it out of the pond and placed it in the snow and snapped this photo. Poor fish.

Five Year Journal

Levenger 5-Year Journal

I just finished my first 5-Year Journal from Levenger and I can’t recommend it enough.

The idea is to write a short sentence or two each day. The journal is laid out so that each page contains five entries, one per day for each of the five years. It’s great seeing what I wrote on any given day in prior years. It’s easy to spot things that have changed over time. Better yet, it’s easy to spot the things that haven’t.

I bought four of them and now have three left. That’s 15 more years of small daily records. Priceless.
