Tug-o-war

My nifty little Sony P150 has a movie mode that I thought was a silly and unnecessary feature. Turns out recording the occasional movie is kinda fun. For example, this movie of Jess and Zim playing tug-o-war is something I’m glad I have.

Wikipedia rules!

Wanna learn as much as possible about the horrific Indian Ocean earthquake and it’s aftermath? Forget CNN and whatever other news sites you visit, check it at Wikipedia instead. Amazing.

If only CNN was a Wiki…

From a CNN Story about the recent earthquake… “Some of the tsunamis reached as far as 1,600 kilometers (91,000 miles) from the epicenter of the 9.0 magnitude quake…” Eh?

Napoleon Dynamite

I knew going in that I would seriously dislike Napoleon Dynamite. All the kiddies at Sundance loved it and it starred what looked to be carrot top’s half-brother. I sat through the first 5 minutes with a bemused look on my face. Shortly thereafter I laughed. Then I laughed again – almost continually for the remainder of the film. I’m not sure why, but I was hysterical. The movie really doesn’t try to be terribly funny, but when Kip ran over the tupperware bowl I almost wet myself.

Merry Christmas

Have a great Christmas everyone. I would wish you “Happy Holidays” instead, but don’t kid yourself – it’s Christmas, doesn’t matter what you choose to call it.

Shaun of the Dead

I watched the Dawn of the Dead remake a few weeks ago and was bored silly. I said at the time that I never needed to see another zombie movie. I was wrong. Shaun of the Dead is the only zombie movie I needed to see. Actually, see Romero’s original if you haven’t, but other than that with Shaun you’re good to go. It’s funny, a little sweet, and zombies literally tear the guts out of at least one of the lead characters.

The Graphing Calculator Story

Today, I was going to launch Apple’s Graphing Calculator for the first time since getting my iMac. Much to my surprise, it wasn’t there. I went looking and found that it doesn’t ship with OS X. What I found, other than a new OS X version, was the story of how it came about. Assuming it’s true, it’s a great story.

Desktop Manager

A great feature of the Linux desktops is the ability to have multiple virtual desktops. For some reason OS X doesn’t have such a thing, so I went looking and found Desktop Manager. It’s fast, functional and free. Too much clutter on your screen? Move a few windows off to a separate desktop. And I just can’t get enough of the “Cube” transition. Between this and Quicksilver I should never have to use that awful Dock again.

Folding Laundry

From Kyle Cassidy, the coolest “Leica Guy” I know, in a post to the Leica User Group… “i will come and confiscate your leicas and donate them to school children. this goes for all of you (are you listening?) you have a freaking $1300 camera. go take some @#$! pictures! as i have told y’all before, (perhaps not in so many words) when Vanity Fair or Harpers or Newsweek or whomever tells a photographer “I want some exciting pictures of people folding laundry” gosh darn it, they get exciting pictures of people folding laundry.

Expose Blob

A hidden expose feature exposes an aqua blue “blob” which triggers Expose’s App mode when clicked. As a new Mac user, Expose is one of the things that makes me love my decision to switch. I do tend to trigger it a bit too easily, and the Expose Blob solves the problem nicely. Once enabled, it displays a shiny blob that floats above everything and when clicked, triggers Expose. Drag it mostly off screen to make it less obtrusive.
