1st major iMac gripe

Window resizing sucks all the way ‘round. First, I have to hit one little tiny corner way down there in order to resize a window. Windows does this better. Second, it takes forever for windows to redraw after resizing. Seek, click, drag,… wait for it…, window resizes. Some apps are worse than others, but sheesh. The iMac G5 may not be the fastest Mac available, but are you telling me I need 2 processors in order to move a simple little window around the screen?

Happy Birthday Jess

My girl turned 16 yesterday. I’ve wondered what that would be like – and now I know. Teenagers are tough. If lately I’ve mentioned that a few too many times, I’ve mislead you. She’s friendly, fun, fantastic, and quite simply my favorite person in the entire world, forever. So what’s it like? It’s wonderful. Happy birthday baby girl.

G5 Optimized Firefox Builds

I’ve heard good things about the Firefox builds optimized for the G5, so I’m trying it. Pages load noticeably faster, and scrolling long pages is much faster. Stable so far, too. He’s also built in modified versions of form widgets, which look nicer than the defaults.

All this great software!

When did they start making so much excellent software for the Mac? When I left there was like, Quark and Photoshop. Nearly every time I start looking for some utility or other app, I seem to find something that is not only applicable, but pretty damn polished as well. Seem that all the freeware/shareware folks are in some sort of contest to see who’s software looks and feels the best. It’s a contest that ends up with everybody a winner.

Tabbrowser Extensions

Firefox tabbed browsing is great, but only until you’ve installed the Tabbrowser Extension. You’ll then have… A close box on every tab, as it should be (must be enabled) The ever-popular “Undo Close Tab” item. Drag and drop tabs to re-order them. When closing a tab, the previously selected tab is then selected (must be enabled) And a ton more.

Firefox 1.0

I started using Firefox when it was called “Phoenix” and was still at something like version 0.0.0.5. (and already better than IE.) You all know they just released version 1.0, so just go ahead and upgrade. Everyone has been feeding the rumor mill about Google building a browser. I don’t know anything about that, but did y’all notice that the new Firefox start page is http://www.google.com/firefox. Interesting. (I tried <google.com/ie> and I’m not sure I get the joke, if there is one)

Hack a Day

Hack a Day always makes me wish I had more time to allocate to just-for-the-helluvit activities.

Delicious Library

Timeline…. Oct 1st – Nov 7th 2004 Wait patiently for the release of Delicious Monster’s Library Nov. 8th, 9:00am Receive email notification that Library is shipping and ready for download. Too bad I’m on my PC at the office. Nov 8th, 7:45pm Download the demo and poke around a bit. It’s nice, maybe a tad slow. Nov 8th, 8:00pm Hook up digital video camera to iMac and turn it on.

Hi Mac!

Time for a change. It’s been a few days since I got my new iMac, which might explain why it’s been quiet around here this week. I’ve been spending as many waking moments as I can getting used an entirely new OS. I haven’t used a mac regularly for a long time and I thought it was time to come back for a few reasons… Most of my development work is now targeted toward Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP, and OS X is unix, which feels more and more like home.

Going Postal

Just finished Going Postal by Terry Pratchett. I’ve heard whispers that the Discworld books by Pratchett are a joy to read, but never really followed up. Turns out I’ve got a lot of catching up to do – there’s like, 12 33 of them. The book reads like something between Douglass Adams, Monty Python and Tolkien. I laughed out loud, which is good.
