Adactio: Journal—Regressive Web Apps

Jeremy Keith – Regressive Web Apps The killer feature of the web—URLs—are being treated as something undesirable because they aren’t part of native apps. That’s not a failure of the web; that’s a failure of native apps. I, too, want to see the damn URLs. Let web apps be web apps.

The Freewrite is not my type – rabble.ca

Wayne MacPhail on rabble.ca: “Look at me, I am an artisan so devoted to my craft that I will spend $750 on an ugly, heavy near-useless device, with a shitty little screen.” Guess he’s not a fan of the Freewrite. I get it. It is a little twee. I certainly don’t plan to use it at a coffee shop, either. But I sure do love writing on it.

Leeloo, Nikon F3, Tri-X, HC-110, Pakon and done

Leeloo. Nikon F3. Tri-X in HC-110 (B). 50mm 1.4 Leeloo is beautiful but is not the most photogenic of dogs. It takes work to get a reasonably pleasing shot of her. I like this one. The photo was taken with the new (to me) Nikon F3 which I’m enjoying very much. It feels like a camera that has just what is needed but no more. Not as minimal as the old Leica’s I’m used to, but the viewfinder is huge and bright and automatic exposure sure comes in handy.

Saving a Maildir email as .eml using Mu4e

I use Emacs and Mu4e for managing email. Normally having all of my email as text files in Maildir format is fine. There are times, though, when I want to save a copy of an email and put it in DEVONthink with everything else. DEVONthink handles email very well, meaning it previews the headers separate from the messages and formats things nicely. The problem is that this only works with .

Nikon F3 First Impressions

Nikon F3 HP and MD-4 Motor Drive The Nikon F3 has been high on my wish list for a long time. I finally pulled the trigger and am the happy owner of an excellent copy with motor drive and 50mm 1.4 Nikkor AI lens. In production from 1980 until 2001, the F3 was a professional workhorse for more than 20 years. Can you imagine any consumer item being in production, relatively unchanged, for 20 years?

Twitter not considered harmful

I read things and wonder about them. For example, is Twitter a distraction that I should jettison? Is it making me unhappy? No. I’m sure I would not be, as many seem to suggest, “happier” if I ignored Twitter. Twitter is fine. I spend less than an hour a day reading/posting. I follow people I enjoy. I’m endlessly amused by things people post. I get my news and can communicate with people it would be difficult to contact otherwise.

Mother’s Day

Spending time with my mom on Mother’s day. She decided to plant some flowers in my yard. She’s the best. Me and Mom. Nikon F100. HP5+ in TMAX 1:4 (photo by Ron Baty) Mom and Dad Portrait. Nikon F100. HP5+ in TMAX 1:4 Mom. Nikon F100. HP5+ in TMAX 1:4

I don’t like what’s happening with Apple

As a long-time Apple fan, I’ve been discouraged by what I’m reading lately. The Arments and Grubers of the Mac community have been spending much of their time writing about where and how Apple has been lacking. I’ve been wondering the same thing. For years I’ve defaulted to using whatever Apple provided, both hardware and software. I knew it would be best in class and would just work. This feeling has been fading.

My Office at Fusionary

My office at Fusionary I cleaned my office at work yesterday morning and snapped this photo. I can (and do) sit there all day and still enjoy it very much.

Snapshots with the Hasselblad

Katie (2016). Hasselblad 503CXi. HP5+ A Hasselblad 500-series camera is not suitable for snapshots, but I keep taking snapshots with them. This photo of Katie was taken using the 503CXi with the 150mm Sonnar. She’s 17 years old but never seems to stand still, so I had to follow her around and wait for a break in the action. This is the best I could do. Still, I love the way the lenses render.

Back to Spacemacs and Org Mode

I’ve been trying to quit Org Mode and Spacemacs for weeks. Everything was going fine until I accidentally double-clicked a .org file and Spacemacs opened the file. Then it was all over. There’s nothing that comes close to Org Mode for task management, document production, and general editing. I just wish it worked on my iPad without having to jump through all sorts of hoops. Again.

mirror.baty.net

I love the idea of running a completely static site, but I don’t like the process of publishing one. Still too finicky for me. Having a bunch of html files in a directory feels so good though! Baty.net is currently running WordPress, which is in my opinion the easiest and most complete way to run a personal (self-hosted) blog. I’ve tried most everything available, and I keep coming back to WordPress because it really is capable of anything I’d want to do and it does it without fuss.
